  102. To install the VendView viewer, simply unzip or copy all files into a
  103. single directory on your hard drive.
  104.  
  105. For convenience, you may wish to place the directory on your DOS PATH,
  106. probably via a PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (Consult your
  107. DOS manual if you're unfamiliar with this operation. If you're using
  108. MS-DOS v5.0 or later, you can use the command "help path" to learn
  109. more.)

  111. Many users keep their DOS PATH and directory structure simple, by
  112. placing small utility programs in a single directory rather than
  113. allocating a separate directory for each utility. If you wish to do
  114. this, you can place these files:
  115.  
  116.    VENDVIEW.EXE (the program itself)
  117.    VENDVIEW.HLP (the program's help file)
  118.    CATEGORY.INF (a list of product categories used by VendView)
  119.  
  120. into a directory that is already on your DOS PATH.  It is inadvisable to
  121. use the \DOS directory for this purpose, but you may find it convenient
  122. to keep such programs in a directory that you create, such as C:\TOOLS.
  123. These three files must be installed in the same directory, for proper
  124. operation of VendView.

  126. The remaining files can be retained or eliminated, as you prefer. (You
  127. may wish to leave all files in the same directory until you've become
  128. familiar with VendView.)

  131. QUICK START
  132.  
  133. To invoke VendView on a VENDINFO file, make sure the file is in the
  134. current working directory, and execute the command
  135.  
  136.    vendview

  138. If you have not placed VENDVIEW.EXE in a directory that's on your
  139. DOS path, You'll need to use the full pathname of that file, such as:
  140.  
  141.    c:\vendview\vendview.exe
  142.  
  143. If you're executing VendView from a read-only medium, such as a
  144. CD-ROM drive, you'll have to use the -d (directory) command-line
  145. flag, to assign a writeable directory in which VendView can create
  146. its VENDVIEW.CFG configuration file.  You might also need to do
  147. this if you're using a version of MS-DOS earlier than 3.0.
  148. An example might be:

  150.    d:\files\vendview\vendview.exe -dc:\myconfig

  152. In most cases, a software package will contain only one VENDINFO file,
  153. it will have the standard filename VENDINFO.DIZ, and VendView will load
  154. it automatically. If the current directory contains multiple VENDINFO
  155. files, you can either load the preferred file after starting VendView,
  156. or you can specify it by adding the filename to the command line, as
  157.  
  158.    vendview INCXT11.DIZ

  160. For a really quick start, just invoke VendView in the directory in which
  161. you've installed it.  You'll have access to the help system, which tells
  162. you everything you need to know to make use of VendView, and you'll be
  163. able to practice by viewing the VENDINFO.DIZ file that comes with
  164. VendView itself.

  166. The context-sensitive help system should provide you all the additional
  167. information you require.  Just press F1 or Alt-H for help.  Pressing F1
  168. twice, from anywhere, will display the help system index.
  169.  
  170. It is suggested that you use the help information extensively at first,
  171. and specifically that you read the first three items in the index. These
  172. provide a quick introduction to the VENDINFO system in general, and to
  173. the use of VendView in particular.
